Trane Portal UX/UI Redesign

Overview

An improved mybuilding.trane.com (MBT) customer facing site that provides a one stop shop to users for all Trane service applications. Some of these applications will be SSO-enabled (Single Sign-On) in phase 1 while links to the login page will be included for non-SSO enabled applications. SSO-enablement for such applications will be undertaken in the future.

Problem

Trane needed a login page where users can enter their user credentials that are to be used by all SSO-enabled applications and also access links to non-SSO enabled applications. Active links for non-SSO enabled applications such as Energy Performance and Fellon-McCord should be displayed.

Figure 1. MyBuilding.Trane.com before the redesign.

Clicking on the non-SSO enabled link for any application should take the user to the login page of that application.

Research & Analysis

MBT provides cross marketing/sales for all controls and Intelligence Service. With greater than 30,000 system control(SC) devices in service today and an average of 5,000 per year increase estimated, anyone who purchases a SC control system or any Energy Service/Intelligent Service agreement will connect/access to these services through MBT; a one stop shop for any Trane Controls or Services Subscriber.

Service Map

We identified the need to increase Intelligence Services linkage (Current Linkage: less than 8%).

User Roles/Access

We were able to define detailed roles and permission structure, using Trane's vast data pool. The data looked something like this:

USER ROLES/ACCESS SITES DEVICES
Trane Corporate HQ All Sites All devices from accessible sites.
Trane Sales Office All sites belonging to specific office. All devices from accessible sites.
Customer Account Managers All sites belonging to specific customer. All devices from accessible sites.
Customer/Client* All sites allowed by customer admin. All devices from accessible sites.
Installer/Contractors** Most likely, third party person who may be installing equipment, but is NOT in the customer's organization. Permissions TBD with input from the security team.

* Customers may have their own internal roles and permissions associated with such roles which would be managed by the customer Admin. ** Customer users may see content that is allowed by the permissions assigned by their Customer Admin

Scope & Solutioning

With roles and privileges in place, we were able to define the scope of the redesign with the data available to us.

In Scope Out of Scope

Role Based Access Control.

Adding navigation to access Tracer SC, CC, all existing systems (Link or secured pass through {auto login}).

Site Selection capability for applications that do not have it today.

Design modifications of existing product TraneConnect to improve usability.

Mobile enabled – Login, Home page, and Site Selection page must be usable on Mobile devices.

Rebranding - Trane Building Advantage.

Quick Links for EP and Fellon-McCord on the MBT login page which users can use to navigate to the application login page.

Shared product verification testing with other teams.

Energy Performance SSO.

Fellon-McCord SSO.

Concierge access.

Proposed Solution

The decision was made for a medium term revamp of MBT:

  • Create a one stop site aligned with the new Trane Building Advantage brand, Group SSO and Site Selection capability.
  • Make it Mobile accessible for desktop, tablet, and phone.
  • Provide self help capabilities for our customers, while reducing our support cost.
  • Add Dual Sign On (DSO) access points for Fellon-McCord and Energy Performance.

Design Concepts

The redesign had to provide access to buildings/sites/devices and multiple applications using:

  • One URL (E.g. www.site.com)
  • One login for all applications/tools
  • One password for all applications/tools
  • A secure site that allows secure access
  • Improved usability for the field and customers

Results

The MBT portal design project resulted in significant cost savings for the company:

  • The user-experience in the customer portal is streamlined and consistent across all devices, including being totally mobile optimized.
  • It increased productivity. Customers previously spent significant time navigating Trane’s cluttered service offerings, information overload and unnecessary clicks-through schema.
To design is to communicate clearly by whatever means you can control or master. Milton Glaser

There existed a need to serve customers in the quickest possible way without compromising on their ability to comprehend. This redesign reduced the time required for these tasks and improved customer self-service by 30%.
