Trane Pivot Mobile App UX/UI Design

Overview

The Pivot Thermostat System includes the smart thermostat, the mobile app and the contractor portal. It is specifically designed for commercial applications and works with Trane equipment as well as equipment from other manufacturers. The scheduling process is intuitive and the thermostat provides commercial features you’d expect like economizer enable, optimal start/stop and both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity options.

Problem

Trane's Pivot moblie app needed a UI designed and flow diagramed for Pin based Access Restriction that includes pin storage, retrieval, and security involved. Users would be restricted to a four character numeric Pin.

Inital scope would include the Pin entry screen and error scenarios; excluded would be Pin configuration and enabling/disabling screens.

Scenarios & Personas

User Scenarios
Mobile app functions:
  • Pin access for the thermostat is disabled by default and must be enabled using the Mobile App.
  • Pin access is available only for thermostats that are registered.
  • Pin access is configured in the Mobile App for one or more thermostat.
  • Pin access can be disabled from the Mobile App for one or more thermostats.
  • Access Level Restrictions are configured in the Mobile App for one or more thermostats.

Personas

With common scenario’s in place, we were able to define detailed personas, using Trane's vast data pool. The personas looked something like this:

Wireframing & Prototyping

With roles and privileges in place, we were able to whiteboard the structure of potential solutions.

User Testing

Users requested the following features:

  • Pins for Menu and Tech Access can both be enabled and both the same number, or different numbers.
  • Pin for the Menu can be enabled, while the PIN for the Tech Access can be disabled.
  • Pin for the Tech Access can be enabled, while the PIN for the Menu is disabled.
  • Pins can be changed for each thermostat or multiple thermostats with the Mobile App.
  • A temporary PIN can be enabled for each thermostat or multiple thermostats using the Mobile App.
  • Timeout and retry times will be configured in the Mobile App.
  • An audit log for PIN access and PIN changes will be available for viewing in the Mobile App for each thermostat.

Design

The design was styled consistently to similar elements withn the XL824 graphical interface.

Results

By allowing the security settings on the Trane Smart Thermostat to be set and modified via the Mobile App, commercial users are allowed greater flexibility and remote access to their system settings, while avoiding unauthorized changes. Authorized users can change the lock settings, and either restrict access to settings completely, or allow partial access to adjust previously saved cooling and heating settings.
