Trane Moble Service Tool Design

Overview

Trane Mobile Service Tool is mobile phone app for Service Technicians, both third party contractors and Trane technicians, who are responsible for the start up and maintenance of equipment with Symbio 700 and 800 unit controllers, replacing the legacy servicing tools used on older controllers.

Problem

Provide Service Technicians with direct integration between the controller and the app, letting the Tech view and manipulate equipment datalogs (trends) in real time. Currently technicians must access trend information through Trane's Tracer TU application.

Clicking on the non-SSO enabled link for any application should take the user to the login page of that application.

Research & Analysis

MBT provides cross marketing/sales for all controls and Intelligence Service. With greater than 30,000 system control(SC) devices in service today and an average of 5,000 per year increase estimated, anyone who purchases a SC control system or any Energy Service/Intelligent Service agreement will connect/access to these services through MBT; a one stop shop for any Trane Controls or Services Subscriber.

User Scenarios

With common scenario’s in place, we were able to define detailed personas, using Trane's vast data pool. The personas looked something like this:

Personas

Tom is a 31 year old HVAC service technician and is certified to work with refrigerants nd has a 2 year HVAC service technician degree.

One of Tom's challenges is having to work on new and old units, some with sophisticated tools while others have no OEM (Orginal Equippment Manufacturer) tools available.

User Testing & Wireframing

We decided to use a simple and quick charting configuration for viewing data logs that have been created on the Symbio 800. Ideally we'd use a react native charting component, since the functionality may be dictated by the features in the React Native component.

User Testing

With common usage scenario’s in place, we were able to define testing criteria and gather the following data:

Create Data Logs screen Point Settings screen View Data Log screen

(Don’t need Collection Start)

Data collection Period or Duration (minutes, hours, weeks, years)

Data collection Interval (minutes, hours)

Navigation to – Details / Delete / Create Data log Pages

Direct link to Delete / Create Data log

Remove Delete on the Create Data Log Page

Points that are static (heater types) disallowed

Points that don’t make sense to chart (run time or starts) disallowed

Point with Units NONE, but actually have units (Trane dimensionally issue)

Point with Units Percent that should be %RH, %CO2 (Trane dimensionally issue

Wireframes

The concepts were designed to streamline the technician's interactions with the Symbio 800; simplifying the extraction of data, so it can be sent to Trane personnel for performance diagnostics on a faulted piece of equipment.

Design Concepts

The design's component functionality was expanded to include:

  • Show list of data logs
  • One Login for all applications/tools
  • User can select a datalog and view data in a line chart
  • Pinch and zoom to scale the time period
  • User can choose between: day, week, month views
  • Support selecting multiple datalogs and comparing on one chart
  • Compare matching time periods
  • Line comparisons
  • portrait and landscape modes

Results

A complete redesign of mybuilding.trane.com, focusing on the latest design trends and a great responsive user experience for Trane’s users. We were able to create a cloud-based customer portal that is able to securely manage, service and optimize our customer's operations from anywhere, at anytime.
